Thomas Gainsborough
Mr. and Mrs.
John Gravenor and their Daughters,
Elizabeth and Ann
c. 1754
35 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. (90.2 x 90.2 cm)
John Gravenor
was a successful apothecary in Ipswich, the town to which Gainsborough
had moved from his native Sudbury in 1752. In 1754 Gravenor turned
his hand to local politics, and it is likely that he commissioned
this portrait of his family to celebrate his new role in public
life. With him are his second wife, Ann, and their two daughters,
Elizabeth and Ann.
