Sir
Joshua Reynolds
Mrs.
Abington as Miss Prue in Congreve's "Love for Love"
1771
30 1/4 x 25 1/8 in. (76.8 x 63.8 cm)
The
actress Frances Barton (born 1737), better known as Mrs. Abington,
was one of the most popular figures of the London stage. Reynolds
shows her in one of her most successful roles, that of the young
ingénue Miss Prue in Congreve's comedy "Love for Love." Showing
Mrs. Abington in character (indicated especially in her uncouth
pose), the work straddles the line between a straightforward portrait
and an "historical" picture whose associations extended beyond the
subject's physical likeness.
