Paul Sandby
Hackwood Park,
Hampshire
1763-64
40 3/16 x 50 1/4 in. (102.1 x 127.6 cm)
Built by the
1st Duke of Bolton in 1683-87, Hackwood Park stands to the south
of Basingstoke in southern England. Its best known feature was a
large classical garden, although Sandby presents a scene of rustic
charm rather than formality. His painting was commissioned by Charles,
5th Duke, along with that of another ducal property, Bolton Park
in Yorkshire; they probably hung as decorations in the duke's newly
refurbished London home at 37 Grosvenor Square.
